Your New Year's Resolution to Lose Weight Some Easy Techniques

Well New Year's Day has come and gone and along with it came millions of New Year's resolutions. One of the most popular that is made year in and year out is the resolution to lose weight. This is not surprising when many health experts are claiming obesity epidemics in many countries around the world.

There are some conditions that cause people to be overweight and can only be diagnosed by a physician. People who are diabetic are often overweight, just as people who are overweight often become diabetic. There is a direct correlation between the two. Genetics play a role in whether a person becomes overweight. Thyroid, pituitary or metabolic problems can also cause a person to become overweight. A number of problems can cause problems with weight, so it is always best to see a doctor before considering any particular weight loss program.

Excluding any physical disorders, weight loss can often be achieved by changing eating and behavior patterns alone. It has been suggested that by reducing one's diet by approximately 75% and exercising is one way to lose weight. Seventy-five percent seems like a lot for any person to achieve. The key is to not only reduce the amount of food eaten, but to change what is eaten. Many of us are hooked on junk food. Who wouldn't rather eat a donut than carrot? But donuts aren't going to help anyone achieve weight loss. There are some basics to weight loss that may seem obvious, but many people don't consider when they try to lose weight.

Fruits are wonderful diet foods. Not only do they satisfy the craving for sweets, but they're also nutritious and a great source of fiber which helps clear out some of the weight we're all carrying around. Just nutritionally speaking, one is better off filling up on fruit than on empty calorie sweets like candy bars or fatty snacks like potato chips.

Water. Most doctors will tell you that many people who drink a lot of carbonated beverages and not enough water walk around dehydrated most of the time. Being dehydrated causes your body to retain water. Drinking water causes our body to release water. Water weight can account for a significant amount of weight on the scale. So drinking the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day will not only help fill you up, it can also help you lose weight.

Cut out the salt. Salt is another culprit that causes water retention. Salt is added to many of our foods without us even realizing it, especially pre-packaged foods. Staying away from pre-packaged foods and not adding additional salt to meals can also help shed water weight.

Eating more protein containing foods such as lean meats, soy, eggs and nuts can also help sustain energy because it causes a longer energy burn in the body. It's like adding a nice dry log to a fire rather than a bunch of small twigs that go up quickly, but are gone in a flash; sugars are the twigs for your body. Proteins can also help you to feel fuller faster. Chew your food thoroughly. Your stomach has to send signals to your brain to let your brain know you're full. Many of us have already overeaten by the time our brain receives this signal. Not chewing your food and eating quickly can cause you to gain weight.

While these techniques may not quite get you to that goal of reducing your food intake by 75%, it may help you on your way to losing some of that weight you wanted to for the New Year.

Do you know 10 Worst Way to Lose Weight

It's an age-old struggle for humans to have the "perfect" body. Everyone knows that the best way to achieve this is to find a weight that you are comfortable with and maintain it with a healthy diet and regular exercise, as well as having a positive self-image. However, in this mass-media laden society that we as Americans live in, there seems to be a plague of "get thin quick" schemes - I, myself, have fallen prey to several over the years.

1. Binge and purge

Binging is the act of eating until you are sick to your stomach or eating massive amounts of food to combat depression or "bad" emotions, and is often associated with the disorder bulimia nervosa. Purging is the act of ridding your body of all this food, through vomiting, use of laxatives, diuretics or enemas. Both binging and purging are incredibly destructive to your body. Filling your stomach to capacity will stretch out the lining, making it weak, and causing you to be more susceptible to ulcers and/or hiatal hernias - the protuberance of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weak spot in the diaphragm (just to name a couple of problems). Purging can also cause ulcers, hiatal hernias and erosive esophagitis, and if the situation gets out of control, occasional binging and purging can lead to bulimia nervosa, resulting in hair loss, muscle atrophy, tooth enamel weakening, and so on.

2. Rapid Weight Loss Pills

There is a plethora of magic pills on the market today. From Hoodia to Acai Berry, most of the pills claim to be all-natural, herbal, and guaranteed. The truth about these pills is that they are not tested or approved by the Federal Drug Administration, therefore they don't have to live up to their claims, actually contain what they claim to contain, and they don't always have to be safe. For example, a popular weight loss and energy pill once contained ephedra. Ephedra is now banned in the United States, due to the fact that it causes heart attacks, strokes, and even death. There is really no way of knowing what you're getting, and it's frankly not worth it to take your chances.

3. Starvation

Perhaps one of the very worst ways to lose weight, starvation is actually one of the best ways to prevent yourself from losing weight! The common thought is that if you don't eat, you won't gain weight, however, this couldn't be farther from the truth. When you discontinue nourishment, your body immediately goes into "starvation mode" in which every single calorie you put into your body is stored and kept for later. It's thought that this phenomenon came from the times in which humans had to go for days or even weeks during harsh times without food or any sort of nourishment. Quite simply, once you're fully into starvation, your fat supplies will be used up followed quickly by muscle and tissue depletion.

4. Liquid Diet

Well, if you need calories to prevent yourself from going into starvation mode, why not get them from liquids alone? That way you don't have to eat and you can still lose weight safely, right? Wrong. Weight loss shakes, juices, water supplements, meal replacement drinks and so forth are sufficient for jump-starting your weight loss, but they are not recommended for long-term usage. Unfortunately many people use them for this purpose. Drinking a shake for breakfast, another for lunch, with a snack and regular dinner will indeed help you lose weight, at first. However, over time your body and your metabolism will adjust to this intake and the moment you stray from the "plan", here come the pounds back on again.

5. Surgery

Liposuction, gastric bypass and the lap band all seem like great long-term weight loss options. With liposuction, the fat is literally sucked out of your body - wow! That was easy! Gastric bypass makes the stomach smaller and allows food to evade part of the small intestine, causing less calorie absorption and making you feel fuller from eating less food. The lap band is similar to gastric bypass in that it makes the stomach smaller, but there is no actual cutting/moving of the organs and/or intestines. These three surgery options work, but only temporarily. The stomach has the ability to stretch, so even though you may have a physically smaller organ to work with, it can, over time, stretch back out to the original size. All of these surgeries can leave you with devastating scars and flappy, floppy, hanging skin from ridiculously rapid weight loss. In addition, there is no guarantee that you won't gain all or more of your weight back. And, of course, there's the risk that comes with any surgery - long term health problems, complications, and even death.

6. Fad Diets

We know what they are - Atkins (no carbs!), South Beach (only certain carbs!), the cabbage soup diet, pineapple diet, lo-fat diet, and so on. Fad diets are called this for a reason - they are simply a fad, no different from phone booth stuffing or multiple piercings. Fad diets are generally unhealthy, unsustainable, and promise unachievable results. They rarely allow for balance, and any diet that claims exercise is not necessary really just shouldn't be trusted. On a personal note, I tried the Atkins diet about six years ago when it was first becoming popular. I immediately lost weight; in fact, I lost 25 pounds in the first two weeks. However, I lost more that just weight - I lost the shine to my hair, I lost interest in everyday things I used to find enjoyable, and I lost some basic motor skills. Fad diets are simply dangerous.

7. Exercise

Only Eating like a pig and exercising just doesn't work. You can't work out for three hours a day and then stuff yourself with 3000 calories worth of fried foods, sugar and trans-fats. This process is counteractive to a healthy lifestyle and in the end you could be the slimmest and most buff of all your friends, but you're probably going to be the one who dies of a heart attack at a young age.

8. Drugs

Cocaine, meth, some prescription pills, cigarettes and caffeine, to name a few, help with appetite suppression and weight loss. Not only are they often illegal, but they are completely detrimental to your health. They will bring you up and keep you up, but only for a short time, and then you will crash - this is true of caffeine as well, not just illegal "uppers". You will lose weight, you will look pallid and "crack-whorish", and odds are, if you really abuse these drugs, you will become addicted. At that point you will have a much bigger problem than needing/wanting to lose weight, and it's just not worth your life, your family, and your job.

9. Yo-Yo Dieting

"Atkins didn't work, let's try Cabbage Soup - wait, this isn't working either, I think I'm going to start running 7 miles every morning. Dang, I've hit a plateau now, I'm going to have to try something else." Sound familiar? Yo-yo dieting is almost an epidemic. Try one thing, skip to another, always losing weight on each one but always gaining it back between diets. The key to losing weight isn't to diet - it's to make a conscious lifestyle change that includes activity and healthy food as well as healthy portions.

10. Doing it Alone

In any conquest or expedition, support is always necessary for well-being. Tell your friends you are starting a new healthy living plan instead of constantly declining invitations to go out for dinner. Don't be ashamed of wanting to have a better quality of life! Join local groups, whether on-line or in real life, and get the support you need from people who are going through a similar journey. Overall, you need to do what's best for you. Keep in mind that if it sounds too good to be true, odds are it really is.

What to Do If an Over the Counter Acne Remedy Product Doesn't Work for You

Anyone who has spent time, effort and money attempting to find an acne product to clear up their skin knows that finding the right product is not an easy process. This is partly due to the number of products available and the confusing and conflicting messages sent out in advertising. Attempting to use each and every product to decide which will be best for you is no easy task.

Other problems can appear after you have begun using an acne skin product and disappoint you. I once chose a product that was wonderful in clearing up my acne but I found that I was allergic to the lotion and it caused a massive rash over my face. There isn't much point in using a product to get rid of a little pimple when it causes lots of little bumps and dark red swelling all over. Do not give up. There are additional options for you to try.

If you have tried all the over the counter treatments and none of them work for you the first step is to see your doctor. Your physician can suggest some products that may not be easily obtained or point out a different use of the products you have already tried. Your physician can also refer you to a good dermatologist that may specialize in acne and other such ailments. Remember, your acne may be due to a more serious condition like rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis, only your doctor can tell which it is and tell you how to treat it.

Your doctor may also talk to you about laser acne treatment. This procedure is used to get rid of acne and has proven itself to be effective in the most cases. This procedure reshapes the surface of your skin by means of several small lasers. The final effect is to reduce the swells and valleys that skin naturally has to reduce the ability of dirt and oil to pool into any one area causing a pimple to grow. Laser treatment has the added bonus of revealing the newer skin underneath which will give you a healthy glow. If you can maintain this skin with moisturizer and washing daily the acne will stay away permanently.

Surgery is another option you can consider. Much like using a laser, a physician uses chemical injections, peels, and major dermabrasion to remove the peaks and valleys found naturally on the skin's surface and to remove any existing scars where acne is most likely to recur. Whatever you decide it will be the right treatment for you. Look forward to healthier and more beautiful skin!

Three Reasons Why College Students Gain Weight

I believe the "freshman 15," as in 15 pounds, was the phrase we used in college to acknowledge the fact that college students gain weight. While most students probably do not weigh themselves regularly, the combination of an unhealthy diet with too many calories and other unhealthy behaviors frequently lead to unexpected weight gain in school. Here are three reasons why college students gain weight

Reason one: poor diet. The standard unhealthy diet for cold student includes fast food, frozen food, and various other foods with too many calories. Cause students gain weight partially, therefore, because of the things in the. Students who weigh themselves regularly can identify unexpected weight gain early and take steps to combat it, but I suspect that most students are not paying a lot of attention to their weight.

Recent two: lack of exercise. Many college students exercise regularly and take physical education courses. Other college students gain weight partly due to a lack of exercise. While an unhealthy diet and too many calories explains part of these students' unexpected weight gain, exercises also an important piece of the puzzle. Students can take small steps to increase their level of activity, such as walking to campus instead of driving. If students weigh themselves before and after several weeks of such activity, I suspect they will notice a difference.

Reason three: just don't care. Unexpected weight gain is not always disappointing. Some college students gain weight but simply do not care. They realize they're eating too many calories and otherwise having been healthy diet, but they do not care enough to weigh themselves let alone exercised the right. This is unfortunate because the habits people set in college while often stick with them for years or even decades. Students who adopt a healthy lifestyle in college are, in my experience, more likely to remain healthy into their adult years. It is also unfortunate that excessive weight gain by some students damages their social life at this stage; one's social life in adulthood is also affected significantly by the manner in which one socializes in college.

College students gain weight from a combination of unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and poor attitude. Students who experience unexpected weight gain can weigh themselves regularly, exercise, and make sure they do not eat too many calories. These steps will improve the health of most students.
